Benchmark Mineral Intelligence brings clarity to the otherwise opaque markets of the lithium-ion battery (LiB) and electric vehicle (EV) supply chains. Through its services, ranging from PRA, Data, Forecasts and ESG, Benchmark provides stakeholders with actionable intelligence on all stages of the supply chain.
As the sustainability credentials of the LiB supply chain – critical instruments of the energy transition – are coming under scrutiny, this industry must operate with solid ESG values and transparency.
The surge in demand for ESG intelligence on the LiB space led Benchmark to establish its ESG division and ESG Report series. Subscription services cover the upstream mining and converting sector of key battery materials in relation to environmental, social and governance topics, issues, and risks within each sector.
Benchmark’s Lithium ESG Report covers relevant material topics that affect the sustainability performance of lithium companies, including carbon emissions, water usage, community engagement and Diversity & Inclusion.
More than 60 ESG metrics are collected on a company-by-company basis to assess ESG performance – all of which feed into the Benchmark tiering system, which ranks global lithium producers on a range of key environmental, social and governance criteria.
Developed in-house, the methodology for collating and assessing data provides an independent assessment of the industry and seeks to set new ESG standards that are specific and relevant to each step of the LiB value chain.
All lithium producers are tiered in line with the methodology that assesses 7 flagship indicators and assigns every company to a corresponding tier: ranging from Benchmark Approved through to Tier 3. Benchmark’s assessment on company ESG performance is reviewed every quarter.
At the core, Benchmark’s ESG tiering system has a focus on maximising transparency and accountability. There is a considerable lack of sustainability engagement across the lithium sector: Benchmark found that just 45% of operating lithium miners and 42% of operating converters currently produce publicly available ESG/Sustainability Reports.
Through highlighting the gaps in sustainability accounting of the critical minerals that supply the LiB industry, Benchmark hopes to drive this industry forwards in creating a cleaner and more just energy transition.
