Pact’s Child Labour in Mining webinar
December 8, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Online, featuring LME guest speaker
Pact’s webinar “Building resilient livelihoods & tackling child labour: Learnings from Pact’s work in Colombia, DRC and Zambia” commemorates Human Rights Day, one year after the 2021 International Year Towards the Elimination of Child Labour.
Join Pact, government officials and industry stakeholders for an expert discussion on lessons learned from a decade of Pact’s work to end child labor in artisanal and small-scale mining communities producing gold, cobalt and copper in Latin America and Africa. LME Responsible Sourcing Manager, Nicole Hanson, will be a guest speaker.
Child labor in mining affects approximately 1 million children worldwide. These children toil under arduous conditions to extract minerals, including gold found in the circuit boards of laptops and smartphones vital to our daily lives and cobalt, a critical mineral that powers electric vehicles and is key to achieving the Paris Agreement renewable energy transition targets. While the root causes of child labor in mining are context specific and unique to each community, poverty, financial insecurity and the lack of economic opportunities are some of the driving factors. One year after the 2021 International Year Towards the Elimination of Child Labor, let’s pause and reflect on what has been achieved so far, what has changed and what’s next to ensure children’s rights are protected and that the world’s green energy revolution is truly a ‘just transition’.
