What a way to spend 24 (ish!) hours. Roskill are pleased to announce that following the 3 peaks challenge, they have exceeded the £3000 target for Friends of Mufulira
You may have seen brief updates on twitter as Team Roskill conquered each peak- there wasn’t much time to stop and discuss the composition of each rock, much to the dismay of Roskill Geologists.
The weather was kind, very kind, the mosquitoes were plentiful- which may have nudged the group to go even faster to get away from them, and the views were spectacular. Team Roskill were very lucky to complete each mountain without a single drop of rain- not something that was expected after torrential downpours the night before the challenge.
Things started proper just after 6am at the foot of Ben Nevis with a pace not far from a jog! A little over 2 hours later the summit was reached. Sadly, the views from the top of Ben Nevis were obscured by fog- but there was no time to hang around, a few photos then an almost 2hr jog back down to the minibuses.
Everyone made it back to the minibuses within the cut-off point and piled in ready for the 6-hour drive to Scafell Pike. A detour in the Glen Coe valley put the team back by 2 hours which meant nerves were running high at the foot of Scafell, knowing there was less time to complete the climb.
The very fittest of the group scampered off like startled gazelles, whilst a few slower members took a more human pace. With the time constraints a couple of people were unable to summit Scafell and had to turn around ¾ of the way up for a treacherous descent in the dark. Although disappointing this meant that by midnight the team were back in the minibus and now only 45 minutes behind schedule. The air was thick with the scent of muscle rub whilst the team tried to get some sleep on the drive to the final mountain.
The initial 20 minutes or so ascending Snowdon were in the first whispers of daylight, and head torches were needed before a glorious Welsh sunrise greeted the team at the summit.
Donations and support came in from many avenues, and by the time the team had all regrouped at the end of the challenge- team Roskill had exceeded its fundraising target. Roskill are pleased to support Friends of Mufulira- a charity that works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for those living in Mufulira, a Copperbelt town in Zambia.
The challenge was completed within the 25.5 hours (as per new driving guidelines) and Team Roskill are already planning their next fundraising adventure.
