The Indian Government intends to install circa 100 gigawatts of solar power across the country by 2022, which is a 33-fold rise from today’s level. According to the UN’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, ex New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, “the country [is] incredibly well placed to capitalise on the benefits of renewable energy”.
According to Sohrab Darabshaw of Metal Miner, Minister for Coal, Power and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal, said at the recent RE-Invest 2015 solar conference held in India that the government intends to increase the contribution of renewables to 15% of total energy within 10 to 12 years (up from today’s 6%). He also hinted that a renewable energy policy would soon be enacted in India. He added that SunEdison and First Solar had joined commitments made by domestic Indian companies by promising to build in excess of 20,000 megawatts of clean energy capacity in India by 2022.
Total installed photovoltaic solar capacity globally stood at 135,000 MW at the end of 2013, according to First Solar.
