Form
Ingots, free from oxidation – surface condition to be specified – each 8 KG (+/- 1 KG): (Chinese 7 KG (+/- 0.5 KG)), of uniform size and weight.
Chinese: K2Cr2O7 coated, or bare, or bare and acid dipped.
Packaging
Non Chinese: Either paraffin wax covered individually paper wrapped, in steel drums, or free from paraffin wax on pallets.
Chinese: Bundles on pallets.
Lot Size & Tolerance
20 MT (+/- 2%)
Documentation
Standard documentation, as per MMTA Consolidated Regulations, plus detailed packing list.
Weighing & Sampling
As per MMTA Consolidated Regulations.
Other Notes
Non Chinese packing: Buyers should be aware there is usually a price differential between “drummed” and “palletised” material, reflecting the more limited outlets for coated and wrapped material.

Inspection Schedule
Open all containers, note any different markings, forms or indications of heterogeneity. Opening all the containers may well be impractical, alternatively open at least the number of drums for a 20 MT parcel, increasing by a 20% of that number for each subsequent sub lot of 20 MT. That is to say (N + 20% N/2) drums for 40 MT, (N + 20% N/3) drums for 60 MT, etc
Sampling Schedule
If there are no indications of material heterogeneity then sample on an incremental basis of 20 MT sub lots. If heterogeneity is suspected select the incremental groups accordingly but in sublots of 20 MT or less. Select 10% of the ingots schematically, drill each ingot using a predetermined template which accounts for the whole of the ingot form. Taking the necessary steps due to the nature of magnesium and ensuring that any protective coating is restored.
Sample Preparation
The drillings from each incremental sub lot should be mixed, drillings or pieces subdivided if necessary, to produce an homogeneous bulk sample in each instance.
Two options are then open:
1. Quality samples can be drawn from each homogenised sub lot bulk sample for analysis.
2. A composite can be prepared from portions of each of the sublots to give a total parcel bulk sample from which total parcel quality samples may be drawn.
